(SeaPRwire) – BMW formally revealed the new all-electric i3 sedan on Wednesday, representing the second vehicle to debut on its next-gen Neue Klasse platform.

This unveiling is a clear challenge to Tesla’s Model 3 series, a move BMW is making overtly.
The i3 debuts in one configuration—the 50 xDrive—featuring a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain that delivers 469 horsepower. While Tesla’s Model 3 Performance offers 510 horsepower, meaning BMW does not equal it on outright power, the German automaker is emphasizing a different strength.
BMW announces a range of 900 km on the European WLTP cycle, equating to about 440 miles on the EPA standard. This performance would place it substantially ahead of the Tesla Model 3 Performance, rated for 309 EPA miles, and even beyond the Model 3 Premium’s 363-mile range.
Thanks to an 800-volt architecture and sixth-generation eDrive technology, the i3 can regain approximately 250 miles of range in only 10 minutes of charging. Its targeted 0-60 mph acceleration time is roughly four seconds.
Interior and Technology
The interior has been revolved around a 40-inch panoramic display spanning the dashboard. The latest iDrive system operates on BMW’s new Heart of Joy computing platform, which the company claims is ten times quicker than its predecessor.
The new i3 has larger dimensions than the current 3 Series—being longer, wider, and taller—and its exterior styling hints at the design of the forthcoming gasoline-powered 3 Series.
Although U.S. pricing is not yet final, BMW is projected to set the i3’s price near $55,000. This positions it above the Model 3 Premium AWD, which starts around $47,490, but on par with the Model 3 Performance at $54,990.
Production and US Timeline
Assembly is scheduled to start at BMW’s Munich facility in August 2026. European customer deliveries are anticipated in fall 2026, but U.S. buyers face a longer wait, with American deliveries not expected until 2027.
BMW has verified that more variants will arrive later, including a fully electric M3. The i3 and iX3 SUV are components of a wider Neue Klasse launch that encompasses four additional future models.
The automaker has called the Neue Klasse initiative the biggest financial commitment it has ever made.
Among Wall Street analysts, there is currently a Hold consensus rating on BAMXF stock, derived from five Buy, five Hold, and three Sell recommendations over the last three months. The average price target is $104.23, suggesting potential upside of about 14.3% from present levels.
Shares of BMW.DE declined 0.20% on Wednesday, while Tesla (TSLA) dropped 0.38%.
