The Super Mario Galaxy Movie premiered with an estimated $372.5 million globally during its opening weekend, representing the largest worldwide box office launch since Avatar: Fire and Ash in December 2025.
Universal Pictures, a subsidiary of Comcast, distributed the film across over 4,000 screens in the U.S. and Canada. It averaged $30,795 per location—a strong figure, particularly considering most tickets were sold at child pricing.
The domestic three-day Easter weekend collection totaled $130.9 million. Over the first five days, the film is projected to reach $190.1 million domestically, according to Comscore.
International markets contributed an additional $182.4 million to the total. This places the global opening well ahead of most 2026 releases.
Roth analyst Eric Handler predicted the film could earn between $160 million and $200 million during its first Wednesday-through-Sunday stretch, citing Mario’s status as one of the world’s largest gaming franchises with over 430 million copies sold globally.
The movie reunites most of the core creative team from the 2023 original, including producers Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto, director duo Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, and cast members Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Pratt, Jack Black, and Keegan-Michael Key.
The original Super Mario Bros. Movie opened to $204 million domestically over its first five days in 2023 and concluded with $1.36 billion worldwide.
Hollywood’s Wider Recovery
The Galaxy Movie’s debut boosted the weekend’s total domestic top 10 take to $195.7 million. This pushed Hollywood’s year-to-date box office to $2.05 billion, a 26% increase compared to the same period in 2025, per Comscore.
Amazon MGM’s Project Hail Mary remained in second place for its third weekend with $30.7 million. The Ryan Gosling sci-fi film now stands at $217.2 million domestically and $420.7 million worldwide. Mexico alone accounts for $119.4 million of its international total.
A24’s The Drama debuted in third place with $14.4 million across 3,087 screens. This R-rated romantic comedy starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson has already surpassed its production budget in its opening weekend, including combined international ticket sales of $28 million.
Other Performances This Weekend
Disney and Pixar’s Hoppers earned another $5.8 million in its fifth weekend, bringing its domestic total to $149.6 million. Globally, it has now reached an estimated $332.2 million, ranking among the top three films of the year worldwide.
Universal’s Reminders of Him rounded out the top five with $2.2 million.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Project Hail Mary together accounted for nearly $192.6 million of the weekend’s $195.7 million domestic top 10 total.
