Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, September 20, 2025 – Demonstrating a unique blend of tradition and sustainability, several prominent temples and churches in Kerala have started using Mobile Septage Treatment Units (MTUs) to manage solid and liquid waste responsibly during peak pilgrimage seasons.
Leading this initiative are the Ettumanoor Mahadeva Temple, Erumeli Sree Dharmasastha Temple, Vaikom Mahadeva Temple, and Manarcadu St. Mary’s Church. These religious centers collectively host millions of devotees annually, which poses significant sanitation challenges. By utilizing mobile, truck-mounted waste treatment units on-site, they are setting a new standard for responsible and innovative waste management in India.
A New Model of Awareness and Responsibility
The implementation of MTUs at these sacred sites signifies a high level of environmental consciousness and civic duty within Kerala. Instead of transporting untreated waste to distant facilities or using unsafe disposal methods, the MTUs offer immediate treatment, transforming waste into reusable treated water and stabilized sludge for further processing.
This initiative is both environmentally sustainable and economically sound. The use of MTUs creates a new revenue stream for local governments while easing the burden on central treatment plants. It also illustrates how cultural and religious institutions can be instrumental in protecting public health and natural resources.
Scaling a Statewide Movement
Currently, Kerala has over 25 Mobile Septage Treatment Units in operation, with plans to increase the number to 100 within the next two years. The adoption of these units by religious institutions is providing a model for other states in India and countries around the world grappling with the challenges of population growth and sanitation management.
Mr. Manohar Varghese, Director of Bhouma Envirotech Pvt. Ltd., commented on the development:
“This initiative demonstrates how places of worship can inspire society to tackle critical environmental issues. By embracing modern treatment practices, temples and churches in Kerala are showcasing a global example of how faith, responsibility, and innovation can coexist. This is not just about waste management; it is about respecting the environment.”
