DONGYING, China, July 10, 2024 — Sixteen American teenagers from Midland and other friendly cities recently participated in a 10-day cultural exchange program in Dongying, Shandong Province. The event proved to be an enriching experience for the teenagers, who expressed that their visit to Dongying allowed them to fully immerse themselves in the unique charm of Chinese culture and appreciate the warm hospitality of the Chinese people.

Organized by the Dongying Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, the program featured a wide range of activities, including cultural experiences, outdoor explorations, and educational exchanges. At the Youth Demonstrative Comprehensive Practice Base, the teenagers learned the art of shadow puppetry and were captivated by the traditional Chinese folk art. They explored the old streets and alleyways, experiencing firsthand the traditional intangible cultural heritage techniques of sugar painting and dough figurine making, and indulging in authentic Dongying cuisine. They were awestruck by the spectacular confluence of the yellow and blue waters and the sight of rare birds soaring at the Yellow River Estuary Ecotourism Area. A cultural journey to the Sun Tzu Cultural Park offered insights into ancient wisdom, while a visit to the Dongying Art Museum introduced them to traditional Chinese crafts like tie-dyeing. As evening fell, they gathered at the Lancui Lake Tourist Resort to enjoy the vibrant “Wenhui Hehai Music Festival.”

To commemorate their enriching experience, the teenagers created a painting, infused with emotions and stories, capturing their impressions of Dongying over the past ten days. Through their brushstrokes, they incorporated the culture, history, and cuisine of Dongying, reflecting not only their perception of the city but also the deep connection they had formed with the land.
