ZIBO, China, April 24, 2025 — Sunrise New Energy Co., Ltd. (NASDAQ: EPOW), a leading battery material innovator, announced today that its project, “Research and Demonstration of Key Engineering Technologies for Long-Life, Low-Cost Sodium-Ion Battery Hard Carbon Anode Materials,” has been approved by the Guizhou Provincial Department of Science and Technology after several expert reviews. The project will receive approximately $960,000 in funding through a special science and technology grant.
Sodium-ion batteries are attracting attention because they are cost-effective and perform well at low temperatures, making them suitable for large energy storage systems and electric vehicles (EVs) in colder regions. However, the commercialization of suitable anode materials has limited their widespread adoption.
Sunrise’s hard carbon anode technology leads the industry, with performance metrics showing an initial Coulombic efficiency of ≥90% and a capacity retention rate of ≥85% after 1,000 cycles. These improvements are expected to overcome key obstacles in sodium-ion battery development and speed up the implementation of stationary energy storage systems.
Sunrise’s project is the only anode materials project in Guizhou Province to be awarded this grant, according to the official website of the Guizhou Department of Science and Technology.
“We are excited to be at the forefront of innovation in long-life, low-cost sodium-ion battery materials,” said Mr. Haiping Hu, CEO of Sunrise. “This achievement strengthens our leadership in lithium-ion battery materials and establishes Sunrise as a leader in technological innovation in the developing sodium-ion battery industry.”
