ZURICH, Jan. 14, 2025 — WeRide Inc. (NASDAQ: WRD), a global leader in autonomous driving technology, will provide the technology for a new autonomous driving pilot program in Switzerland. Funded by the Canton of Zurich and Swiss national railway Schweizerische Bundesbahnen (SBB), and managed by the Swiss Transit Lab (STL), the project will utilize WeRide’s products and operational support. This selection highlights WeRide’s leading L4 autonomous driving technology and operational expertise, again receiving international recognition.
Initially, two autonomous vehicles equipped with WeRide technology will participate in the testing phase. Upon project launch, expected in the second quarter, up to four vehicles will be deployed, operating in fully unmanned mode for up to five years. The fleet is projected to expand to twelve vehicles in 2026, with further growth anticipated.
The initial autonomous vehicles will operate in Switzerland’s Furttal Region. Residents can book rides via an app provided by ioki.
WeRide founder and CEO Tony Han stated, “This Swiss public transportation pilot project underscores WeRide’s commitment to expanding autonomous driving solutions across Europe. Our adaptable solutions have demonstrated success in diverse settings, from major sporting events and airport operations to public transportation services.”
Trains form the backbone of Switzerland’s intercity transportation network. The Federal Office of Transport (FOT) reports that Swiss residents average 70 train journeys annually, the highest rate in Europe. However, suburban areas often lack sufficient transportation options.
SBB, a project investor and Switzerland’s state-owned railway company, boasts a 3,000-kilometer network, established in 1902. The Canton of Zurich is the second-largest investor. STL, the project manager, is dedicated to fostering innovative mobility solutions. By integrating WeRide’s autonomous driving technology, the project aims to enhance Switzerland’s intelligent transportation infrastructure.
This marks WeRide’s third European project in eight months. Recently, WeRide launched Europe’s first commercial autonomous minibus project at Zurich Airport and provided L4 autonomous shuttle services at the 2024 French Open in Paris.
The choice of WeRide’s technology underscores the versatility and adaptability of the WeRide One autonomous driving platform, demonstrating significant European interest in WeRide’s technology, products, and services.
