RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, July 28, 2025 — WeRide (NASDAQ: WRD), a leading autonomous driving technology company, announced today that its Robotaxi has been granted Saudi Arabia’s first autonomous driving permit for Robotaxis. This achievement positions WeRide as the only technology firm globally with autonomous driving permits for its products in six countries: Saudi Arabia, China, the UAE, Singapore, France, and the US.
WeRide’s Robotaxi in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
The permit authorizes WeRide to operate an autonomous vehicle (AV) business and deploy Robotaxis across Saudi Arabia, beginning with pilot programs in Riyadh in collaboration with Uber and local partner Ai Driver.
The pilot program, launched earlier in July, encompasses King Khalid International Airport and key locations throughout Riyadh, including major highways and select destinations in the city center. WeRide anticipates launching a full-scale commercial Robotaxi service by the end of 2025 through its partnership with Uber.
The permit was officially granted to WeRide’s Robotaxi at a ceremony last week. Attendees included His Excellency Eng. Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, Minister of Transport and Logistics Services and Chairman of the Transport General Authority (TGA); Jennifer Li, CFO and Head of International at WeRide; and other high-ranking Saudi government officials.
WeRide is the first AV technology company whose Robotaxi successfully completed the TGA’s Regulatory Sandbox for AV Piloting in Saudi Arabia. The approval process, conducted with the cooperation of multiple government agencies, involved rigorous testing, evaluations, and technology validation to ensure the Robotaxi’s autonomous driving permit met the highest standards for safety and performance.
“This permit represents a significant milestone in our global expansion, allowing us to expand our Robotaxi services and explore new business opportunities in Saudi Arabia. It facilitates large-scale deployment, opens up new revenue opportunities, and strengthens our dedication to realizing autonomous mobility worldwide. We appreciate the TGA’s support for our vision of safer, smarter transportation on a large scale,” stated Jennifer Li, CFO and Head of International at WeRide.
This announcement follows WeRide’s market entry into Saudi Arabia in May 2025. In addition to its Robotaxi initiatives, WeRide has been testing and operating its Robobus in key areas, including King Fahad Medical City, Aramco residential areas, AlUla, and the Ritz-Carlton, Riyadh. The Robosweeper S1 is also operational at King Fahad Medical City, Riyadh Second Health Cluster, representing the first revenue-generating autonomous sanitation project in Saudi Arabia and the broader Middle East.
WeRide has been rapidly expanding throughout the region in recent months, beyond Saudi Arabia. Its Robotaxis are currently undergoing fully driverless testing in Abu Dhabi—the first such deployment in the Middle East—and the company plans to extend its Robotaxi service to Dubai soon.
