Recently, Xiqing District’s Publicity Department organized a cultural tour for kindergarten children from Yangliuqing Town, Tianjin.

At the Yuchenghao Painting Studio in Yangliuqing Ancient Town, national-level intangible cultural heritage representative Huo Qingshun introduced Yangliuqing woodblock New Year paintings and led a hands-on experience.

Recognized in 2006 as a national intangible cultural heritage project, Yangliuqing woodblock New Year paintings boast a 400-year history, flourishing during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

The period from the Qianlong to Jiaqing reigns marked a golden age for these paintings. As early as the late Ming and early Qing, Yangliuqing was a major production center, known as a “land of painting where every household excels in tinting and painting.”

These paintings encompass diverse themes: mythical stories, historical allusions, novels and legends, women and children, opera characters, ancestral gods, auspicious and wealth-seeking patterns, antique flora, seasonal designs, historical and lantern paintings, and kite paper.

Production combines woodblock printing and hand-painting, involving sketching, carving, printing, tinting, and mounting.
