(SeaPRwire) –
One month after the United States initiated a war with Iran—a conflict showing few indications of easing as both countries have put forward differing proposals for peace—a majority of Americans continue to express criticism of the military effort, recent polling indicates.

Initial surveys taken shortly after the U.S. and Israel conducted a joint strike on Iran on February 28 revealed widespread American disapproval, fueled by an unclear justification and doubts about the conflict’s duration. Several weeks later, newer polls indicate this disapproval has held steady: a Pew Research Center survey issued Wednesday reported that 61% of Americans disapprove of President Trump’s management of the situation, while a poll from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research discovered that 60% of American adults feel U.S. military action against Iran has “gone too far.”

A Quinnipiac University poll also released on Wednesday noted that 42% of registered U.S. voters believe the war has made the world less safe. Even a Fox News survey found 58% of American voters are opposed to the war.

On Tuesday, a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed 61% of respondents disapproved of the U.S. strikes on Iran. An identical percentage, 61%, disapproved of Donald Trump’s job performance as President.

The war, which the Trump Administration initially projected would last roughly six weeks at the longest, has already resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was succeeded by his son. The conflict has also disrupted the global economy and cost the United States billions of dollars.

As the rising expenses increasingly strain American finances and undermine Trump’s campaign theme of affordability, some Republicans have begun to worry the war could damage the party’s prospects in the November midterm elections, where they are attempting to maintain a very narrow congressional majority.

Nevertheless, the Administration continues to justify the military engagement. “Twenty-five days in, the greatest military the world has ever known is ahead of schedule and performing exceptionally,” stated White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt during a press briefing on Wednesday.

Partisan divide

The most recent polls demonstrate that the partisan split in public opinion regarding the Iran war remains pronounced.

The Pew Research poll indicated that while 90% of Democrats and independents who lean Democratic disapprove of Trump’s handling of the Iran conflict, 69% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents approve. In the AP-NORC poll, 52% of Republicans stated the U.S. military action in Iran has been “about right,” with an additional 20% saying it has “not gone far enough.” This contrasts with 90% of Democrats who said it has “gone too far.”

The Quinnipiac survey found 79% of Republicans believe the war with Iran will make the world safer, whereas 74% of Democrats think it will make the world less safe. The Reuters/Ipsos poll revealed that 75% of Republicans approve of the U.S. military strikes on Iran, compared to 93% of Democrats who disapprove.

In the Fox News survey, support for the “Make America Great Again” movement appears to be a key factor in the partisan split: 77% of Republican respondents supported the ongoing U.S. military action in Iran, with that support comprising 90% of MAGA respondents and 52% of non-MAGA respondents.

Republican politicians have generally supported the war with Iran, but a small number of prominent GOP legislators have become more anxious about the Administration’s seeming lack of openness concerning the war’s management and funding.

Politico reported that House Armed Services Committee Chairman Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Ala.) voiced frustration that lawmakers were “not getting enough answers” about the conflict following a classified briefing with Defense Department officials on Wednesday. Separately, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) took to social media to voice concerns about U.S. operations escalating into a ground war, writing: “Let me repeat: I will not support troops on the ground in Iran, even more so after this briefing.”
