According to Ed Martin, the Department of Justice’s Pardon Attorney, President Donald Trump has issued “full, complete, and unconditional” pardons for more than 70 of his political supporters, who were involved in purported attempts to reverse the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.
Early Monday, Martin disclosed the roster of pardoned individuals via a social media post, featuring a signed proclamation. This list includes prominent personalities like Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s ex-personal lawyer and former New York City Mayor; Mark Meadows, his erstwhile chief of staff; and attorneys Sidney Powell and John Eastman, among others.
Martin expressed gratitude, stating, “Thank you, POTUS, for allowing me, as U.S. Pardon Attorney, to work with the White House, along with Attorney General Pam Bondi, Deputy AG Todd Blanche, and Solicitor General John Sauer to achieve your intent.” He acknowledged the team’s contributions to the pardons, adding, “Let their healing begin.”
The complete list is available here:
The pardon, signed by Trump on November 7, declares that “This proclamation ends a grave national injustice perpetrated upon the American people following the 2020 presidential election and continues the process of national reconciliation.”
The pardon covers individuals involved in “conduct relating to the advice, creation, organization, execution, submission, support, voting, activities in, or advocacy for or of any slate of presidential electors… in connection with the 2020 presidential election.”
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt commented on the pardons in a Monday morning statement to TIME, asserting: “These great Americans were persecuted and put through hell by the Biden Administration for challenging an election, which is the cornerstone of democracy.”
Giuliani faced a contempt of court ruling in January due to his failure to comply with an order to transfer $11 million in personal assets to Georgia poll workers, whom he had erroneously accused of assisting in the theft of the 2020 presidential election. He subsequently settled the matter.
Separately, Trump announced in September his intention to award his former lawyer the Presidential Medal of Freedom, an announcement made just days after Giuliani sustained injuries in a car crash in New Hampshire.
Trump has consistently advanced false assertions that he, rather than former President Joe Biden, emerged victorious in the 2020 election, amidst the tense rhetoric on January 6, 2021.
During January, nearly 1,600 individuals were convicted for their roles in the January 6, 2021 Capitol Riots, with sentences also commuted for violent offenders from those riots, including Proud Boys leader Enrique Torrio, who was serving a 22-year sentence.
The former Speaker of the House, , described the pardon as “an outrageous insult to our justice system and the heroes who suffered physical scars and emotional trauma as they protected the Capitol.”
