The House of Representatives adopted a resolution early Friday, condemning the “horrors of socialism.” This occurred only hours prior to New York City Mayor-Elect , a self-identified Democratic socialist, being slated to meet with President Donald Trump at the White House.
The resolution, explicitly stating it “denounces socialism in all its forms, and opposes the implementation of socialist policies in the United States,” was approved by a vote of 285-98. The vote saw unanimous support from Republican lawmakers, with 86 Democrats also voting in favor.
This House vote coincided with the planned encounter between Mamdani and Trump, figures who have been in public disagreement for several months. Numerous Republicans have Mamdani’s earlier this month, presenting his electoral victory as substantiation for their .
“It is highly significant that a communist is set to visit the White House tomorrow, given that the Democratic Party chose him as the mayor of the nation’s largest city,” stated Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt during Thursday’s White House press briefing.
Trump himself has previously mischaracterized Mamdani as a communist and has repeatedly criticized him, including calling him to arrest him if he resisted immigration enforcement agents, and ahead of the general election, he suggested he would retain certain federal funds from New York City should Mamdani secure the mayoral position.
Mamdani, for his part, explicitly conveyed his opposition to Trump, pledging during his campaign that he would be and would employ his authority to
“If any entity can demonstrate to a nation, which has been let down by Donald Trump, how to overcome him, it is the very city from which he emerged. And if a method exists to intimidate a tyrant, it lies in deconstructing the fundamental circumstances that facilitated his rise to power,” Mamdani declared in his on election night. He added, “Therefore, Donald Trump, knowing you are observing, I have a concise message for you: Amplify the sound.”
Despite their past animosity, both politicians expressed openness to a dialogue this week. Trump informed reporters on Sunday of his desire “to see everything work out well for New York.” Mamdani, on Thursday, stated that while he holds “many disagreements with the President,” his intention is to “make it clear” to Trump that he “will collaborate with him on any initiative that serves the interests of New Yorkers.” He added, however, “If an agenda harms New Yorkers,” he affirmed, “I will also be the first to speak out.”
