The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) director stated that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been discreetly dissolved, with eight months remaining on its mandate.
Director Scott Kupor confirmed that DOGE—the extensive cost-cutting initiative spearheaded by billionaire Elon Musk that of President Donald Trump’s second term—”no longer exists,” further noting that the majority of the office’s responsibilities have been integrated into OPM, the federal government’s human resources department.
On Sunday, the news agency reported that Kuper indicated DOGE is no longer the “centralized entity” it was when Trump made the appointment to lead the agency in January.
Musk’s collaboration with the Trump Administration attracted scrutiny due to the extensive access he received across the government in his capacity as a “special advisor,” and the broad implications of the reductions applied to everything from .
Musk and his team promptly initiated cuts to , , closing down entire , and terminating contracts. He deployed his personnel across various government agencies, with the stated objective of making the government more “efficient.”
For several months, Musk consistently restated his primary aim of decreasing the deficit by $1 trillion by September 30. This was prior to a highly public dispute with regarding the President’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which resulted in a rift between the President and his formerly favored advisor.
Upon his departure, Musk had not neared the achievement of the promised savings. DOGE’s website asserts federal savings of $214 billion, yet numerous reports indicate the department exaggerated, revised, or overstated these figures.
TIME’s request for a comment from the White House went unanswered.
Following Musk’s exit from government, scores of staffers—including the central leadership team—have In October, 45 staffers were still with DOGE, and the office during the government shutdown, according to a memo issued at the time.
Many of the remaining individuals have since assumed new positions across various departments within the executive branch. Several prominent staffers joined Trump’s newly established National Design Studio, which is headed by Airbnb . According to Kupor’s interview with Reuters, some of DOGE’s initiatives, such as the government-wide hiring freeze, have also ceased.
