Manhattan Shooting

NEW YORK — A source familiar with the ongoing investigation confirmed that Brian Thompson, chief executive officer of UnitedHealthcare, died from gunshot wounds sustained outside a midtown Manhattan hotel on Wednesday morning.

The source requested anonymity, citing a lack of authorization to publicly discuss the investigation.

While police haven’t officially named the victim, they reported that a 50-year-old man was shot around 6:45 a.m. outside a Hilton hotel before the perpetrator escaped.

Emergency responders transported him to a nearby hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries.

UnitedHealthcare, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group Inc., was scheduled to hold its annual investor meeting in New York City on Wednesday, according to a company press release. The hotel is within walking distance of attractions like the Museum of Modern Art and Rockefeller Center.

Attendees at the investor meeting were informed that the conference had been prematurely concluded.

Thompson had served as CEO for over three years and had been employed by the company since 2004.

UnitedHealthcare is the nation’s largest provider of Medicare Advantage plans and also administers health insurance for various employers and state and federally funded Medicaid programs.
