“We’re constantly encouraged to buy,” states Madhavi Venkatesan, founder and executive director of the non-profit Sustainable Practices. Yet most purchased goods aren’t built to endure. “The ideal product from a sales perspective is one with planned obsolescence,” she notes, which only generates more waste.

Furthermore, many everyday items—from takeout coffee straws to lunch-time plastic utensils to water bottles—are made to be disposable. More than is produced every year, half intended for single use, and less than 10% gets recycled.

“Significant greenhouse gas emissions result from product manufacturing,” Melidosian explains. “We can commit to cutting back on single-use plastics by, for instance, carrying reusable water bottles.”

Create a Disaster Response Plan

Climate change is amplifying the severity and occurrence of extreme weather events. While the specific impact varies by location, evaluating regional hazards and developing a response strategy is essential. Preparation follows a three-step approach, according to Agrawal. Initially, identify the climate threats most probable for your area over the next five to ten years. Next, understand appropriate actions during a disaster, accounting for family members with special requirements such as medical devices or prescriptions.

“Understanding proper procedures during an emergency,” Agrawal emphasizes, “might prove lifesaving when disaster strikes.”
