BEIJING, Dec. 28, 2024 — Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF), containing Perfluorooctane Sulfonic Acid (PFOS), has been widely used for its rapid fire suppression capabilities. However, PFOS’s environmental impact and potential health risks have prompted significant concern, as noted by China News Network.

To tackle these concerns, the Foreign Environmental Cooperation Center (FECO) of China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment, in collaboration with the World Bank and backed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), has initiated the “Reduction and Phase-Out of PFOS in Priority Sectors Project in China.” This project focuses on developing and implementing safer, environmentally friendly alternatives for firefighting nationwide.

This initiative aims not only to enhance fire suppression techniques but also to protect ecosystems, public health, and promote environmental sustainability for future generations. Through innovative research and collaborative efforts, China is actively working towards the complete elimination of PFOS in firefighting foams.
