CHENGDU, China, June 24, 2024 — An art exhibition titled “Exchanging Trash for Dreams” opened on June 5 at the Harvest Moon Art Centre in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province in southwest China.
Utilizing light and shadow techniques and recycled materials, the exhibition portrays the inspiring stories of eight environmental activists in the Sanjiangyuan Nature Reserve, the source of the Yangtze, Yellow, and Lancang rivers.
These individuals include a caravan dedicated to collecting garbage along their route to protect the environment, a couple who volunteer their time to safeguard the Sanjiangyuan Nature Reserve during winter, an independent grassland director committed to capturing the ecological environment through photography, and young volunteers who collect small pieces of trash by hanging plastic bottles on their bodies.
This environmental art exhibition is a collaborative venture between China UnionPay and the Sanjiangyuan Ecological Protection Foundation, receiving significant support from China UnionPay’s Qinghai and Sichuan branches.
The joint initiative aims to raise awareness about environmental protection and encourage broader public participation in safeguarding the Sanjiangyuan ecological region, its pristine landscapes, and China’s natural beauty.
In addition to the art exhibition, the two partners have established an ecological trade-in supermarket in Qumalai County, Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.
Environmental guardians in the Sanjiangyuan region can accumulate ecological credits by collecting litter, which can then be redeemed for everyday necessities, books, and other resources. This innovative approach transforms waste into a means for environmental guardians to improve their lives and pursue their aspirations.
Since 2023, China UnionPay has been actively involved in conservation efforts in the Sanjiangyuan ecological region through diverse initiatives.
Over the next five years, China UnionPay will partner with the Sanjiangyuan Ecological Protection Foundation to restore 1,000 mu of sandy land and 2,000 mu of grassland on the southern shore of Longyang Lake in the upper reaches of the Yellow River. Additionally, a 1,000-mu animal conservation area will be created.
Moreover, China UnionPay aims to engage a wider consumer base in protecting the ecological region through online public fundraising and the sale of themed blind boxes.
China UnionPay’s commitment to green finance is a crucial aspect of its implementation of the directives outlined in the Central Financial Work Conference. It also plays a vital role in supporting the realization of China’s carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals.
In recent years, China UnionPay has been demonstrating its corporate social responsibility through various initiatives, such as issuing green and low-carbon cards, establishing a low-carbon program, and enabling carbon account interconnection with financial institutions like China Construction Bank, CITIC Bank, and Hangzhou Bank.
To date, UnionPay’s low-carbon program encompasses 20 scenarios, including public transportation, subway, bicycles, catering, and hotels. This program has driven green consumption through 2.5 billion transactions, resulting in a reduction of nearly 40,000 tonnes of carbon emissions.
