TAIPEI, TAIWAN, Aug. 04, 2025 — The Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area Headquarters, under Taiwan’s Tourism Administration, M.O.T.C., is partnering with PRONews to promote a slow travel initiative designed to change how people experience Taiwan’s Alishan region.
Traditional Song and Dance Performance at Yuyupas Tsou Cultural Park.
This campaign encourages travelers to look beyond Alishan’s famous sunrises, seas of clouds, and railways, and instead, delve into the indigenous Tsou culture. The initiative promotes a “no rushing, no cloud-chasing” approach, inviting visitors into indigenous villages for guided tours, local cuisine, nature activities, and enchanting firefly viewings. This cultural immersion aims to stimulate all five senses and foster a deeper connection with the land and its people.
The Mihu Trail in Laiji Village is a highly recommended starting point. This peaceful 2.3-kilometer bamboo trail offers a shaded, easy hike suitable for all seasons. Tsou elders lead visitors, sharing tribal stories and knowledge of local plants. This experience provides cultural immersion through storytelling and exploration, creating a serene yet meaningful journey that combines natural beauty with tribal heritage.
While the forest’s beauty is undeniable, the local cuisine truly brings Alishan’s cultural history to life. A traditional railway bento offers a taste of nostalgia, best enjoyed with local specialties like the century-old hinoki doughnut, Granny’s herbal rice cakes, Ai-yu jelly from Uncle Ai-yu, and a traditional tea session at Qingtian Nong Tea House. For a Japanese-inspired afternoon treat, Zuiichi Teahouse offers sweets such as mochi dango and monaka wafers, complemented by mountain vistas and rustic wooden architecture. Shan Furong Tea Cuisine, which requires reservations, blends Tsou culinary traditions with locally sourced ingredients, offering seasonal vegetables from their own farm. Each dish tells a story of harmony with the land, deepening visitors’ understanding of indigenous food culture.
At the Yuyupas Tsou Cultural Tribe Park, visitors can experience the spirit of the Tsou people through immersive activities. Surrounded by tea fields, coffee plantations, and fragrant herbs, the park hosts cultural exhibitions and traditional music and dance performances. The Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area Headquarters, Tourism Administration, M.O.T.C. (Taiwan), has garnered media attention, enhancing Alishan’s cultural visibility both domestically and internationally. The rhythms of drums and songs create a profound experience, while guided tours of the Laiji area reveal stories and landscapes that leave a lasting impression.
While many visitors hurry to see the Alishan sunrise, the night offers its own magic. From April to June, fireflies illuminate the forest, resembling a living constellation. Many local hotels and homestays provide guided nighttime firefly tours, leading guests to secluded areas to witness this enchanting spectacle. The still of the night creates a dazzling and unforgettable connection with nature.
Beyond village life and firefly forests, the Guanyin Waterfall Scenic Area is a must-see natural attraction in Alishan. The easy, family-friendly trail takes about an hour to complete. While in the area, consider these unique experiences: Jin Yang Xin Tea Dining, run by local tea farmers, serves elegant meals featuring tea soup rice and bamboo utensils, offering a refined setting to appreciate nature and Confucian aesthetics. The bamboo-roasted tea workshop allows visitors to participate in traditional tea-making, blending local bamboo and tea leaves to create a fragrant memento from the mountains.

A trip to Alishan is no longer just about ticking off tourist attractions. Instead, it’s about connecting with the local community and the land. From bamboo trails to mountaintop dining, cultural villages to firefly nights, each stop showcases the intersection of nature and culture. Slowing down in Alishan is more than just a vacation; it’s a meaningful journey of self-discovery. The true beauty lies not only in the sights but also in the stories, flavors, and shared moments along the way.
