Himax Technologies is positioning itself as a leader in the next generation of AR applications and optical systems with its new microdisplay, boasting top-tier brightness, energy efficiency, and a remarkably small design.

TAINAN, Taiwan, May 09, 2025 — Himax Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: HIMX), a leading display driver and semiconductor provider, has announced it will present its innovative, compact, high-brightness Dual-Edge Front-lit LCoS microdisplay at Display Week 2025. The event, organized by the Society for Information Display (SID), is a major display industry symposium and exhibition scheduled for May 11–16, 2025, in San Jose. Simon Fan-Chiang, Senior Director at Himax, will offer an in-depth look at the technology during Session 3 of the symposium on May 13.

Himax’s unique Dual-Edge Front-lit LCoS microdisplay combines illumination optics and an LCoS panel in a tiny form, measuring just 0.09 c.c. and weighing 0.2 grams. It aims for a brightness of up to 350,000 nits and an output of 1 lumen while using only 250mW of power, showcasing exceptional optical efficiency. Featuring a 720×720 resolution and a 4.25µm pixel pitch, it provides outstanding clarity and vibrant colors in a small package. The microdisplay’s efficient design allows for significantly smaller devices without sacrificing brightness, clarity, or color quality, setting new standards for miniature optics. Its compact size, brightness, and power efficiency make it perfect for advanced AR glasses and head-mounted displays where size, weight, and heat are critical factors.

“We are excited to launch our advanced Dual-Edge Front-lit LCoS microdisplay, a significant achievement in display technology,” stated Jordan Wu, CEO of Himax. “This innovation is the culmination of years of focused development, offering an industry-leading combination of small size, lightweight design, high brightness, and excellent power efficiency to meet the stringent requirements of AR device manufacturers. We expect this technology to revolutionize next-generation AR applications.”
