NANJING, China, June 11, 2025 — From June 9-13, the China Grand Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage site, will be symbolically represented in Brussels. This year’s “Jiangsu Week,” focusing on the Grand Canal Culture, will comprehensively present the canal’s history and its significance in shaping Jiangsu’s identity.

The opening ceremony of “Jiangsu Week” took place on June 10 in Brussels’ Place de la Monnaie, where the exhibition “Millennia-Old Canal, Charm of Jiangsu” also opened. The exhibition, divided into history, landscapes, intangible cultural heritage, and cuisine sections, vividly displays the historical allure and cultural aspects of life along the Jiangsu section of the Grand Canal.

Former Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme mentioned the longstanding, productive exchanges and cooperation between Belgium and China. He noted the highly successful collaboration between Belgium and Jiangsu Province in areas like trade and cultural exchange in recent years and voiced his anticipation for increased cultural dialogue and interaction between the two.

A large, interactive screen, 14 meters wide and 4 meters high, features the digital artwork The Legend of the Grand Canal, which vividly portrays the 2,500-year history of the Grand Canal, including its creation, development, and prosperous past. It also showcases the canal’s natural beauty in all seasons and the lively scenes that once lined its shores.

In addition to the exhibition, a series of engaging events are being held in Belgium and Croatia, including the “Canal Heritage Shines in Europe: Exploring Intangible Cultural Heritages along the Grand Canal” cultural showcase. These events, filled with Jiangsu’s elegance and depth, intend to present a vibrant and flowing cultural experience to European audiences, bringing the living heritage of the Grand Canal to life internationally.
