NANTONG, China, Aug. 27, 2025 — Jiangyi Village, situated in Liuqiao Town, Tongzhou District, Nantong City, Jiangsu Province, is currently experiencing its peak harvest season for its 4.93 hectares of okra. According to the Jiangyi Village Committee, daily yields are surpassing 1,000 kilograms, with the produce predominantly destined for wholesale vegetable markets in Shanghai and throughout Jiangsu Province.

The harvest commenced in June. For optimal quality, workers customarily begin picking in the early morning hours, maintaining a consistent pod length of 12 centimeters to ensure superior flavor and market appeal. Freshly harvested okra undergoes immediate sorting, packaging, and same-day dispatch to markets.

Four years ago, local farmer Ren Chuanhua initiated okra cultivation within greenhouses in Jiangyi Village. Drawn by Liuqiao Town’s auspicious climate and rich soil, and at the invitation of the Jiangyi Village Committee, he opted to develop significant okra production in the locality. Presently, his agricultural enterprise stands as a distinctive project within the region.

In addition to providing consistent income for cultivators, the burgeoning okra sector has also generated temporary job prospects for local residents, particularly in sorting and packaging. Offering daily wage payments, this initiative significantly enhances the earnings of local families and stimulates rural economic growth across the area.
