SHANGHAI, China, July 26, 2025 — Pony AI Inc. (Nasdaq: PONY), a leading company in the commercialization of autonomous driving technology at scale, announced today that it has been granted a permit to operate fully driverless commercial Robotaxi services in Shanghai’s Pudong New Area. The permit was issued at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (“WAIC”) 2025. This approval highlights the growing regulatory confidence in Pony.ai’s technology and safety standards and marks a significant step forward in the commercial deployment of Robotaxis in a major Chinese urban center.
Pony.ai is among the first to receive this permit, distinguishing it as the only company authorized to provide fully driverless commercial Robotaxi services in all four of China’s tier-one cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. The company will initially launch its driverless ride-hailing services in the Jinqiao and Huamu central business district, with plans to expand to other areas. This achievement underscores Pony.ai’s technological and operational maturity and reinforces its position as a leader in advancing autonomous mobility in China, thereby accelerating the integration of self-driving technology into Shanghai’s urban infrastructure.
Pudong New Area, with a population exceeding 5 million and spanning nearly 1,400 square kilometers, is a hub for key financial institutions, multinational corporations, and high-tech innovation, acting as a significant gateway to China’s economy. The newly operational area in Jinqiao and Huamu is strategically positioned within Pudong New Area. Notably, Huamu is located within 3 kilometers of Lujiazui, Shanghai’s financial epicenter and a prime location for luxury retail. This proximity allows Pony.ai to connect with high-value users and unlock considerable commercial opportunities in the future.
