NEW YORK, Jan. 15, 2025 — Pony AI Inc. (“Pony.ai”), a global leader in autonomous mobility commercialization, has received the first approval in China for autonomous truck platooning tests on cross-provincial highways connecting Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei Province. This achievement is a significant step toward the company’s goal of large-scale commercialization of autonomous trucking.

This approval allows Pony.ai to operate robotrucks in a “1+N” platoon configuration; only the lead truck needs a safety operator, while subsequent trucks operate autonomously. Testing will begin on the Beijing-Tianjin-Tanggu Expressway. Pony.ai’s strategy includes achieving full autonomy for all trailing trucks to further reduce autonomous trucking logistics costs.

Since launching its cross-provincial freight service between Beijing and Tianjin with Sinotrans Limited, Pony.ai has logged over 45,000 kilometers and completed nearly 500 TEUs of freight orders. This demonstrates Pony.ai’s leadership in L4 autonomous truck logistics in North China and its positive impact on the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region’s integrated transportation, driving intelligent logistics transformation and providing valuable real-world data for autonomous truck commercialization.

Pony.ai’s robotruck operations have progressed from initial road testing and demonstrations to commercial operations with autonomous platoons. The next stage involves fully driverless fleets to accelerate mass commercialization of autonomous trucks. As of December 2024, Pony.ai’s robotrucks have traveled over 5 million kilometers (over 3.1 million miles) and transported more than 860 million freight ton-kilometers.
