
During President Donald Trump’s address on Tuesday night, Rep. Al Green interrupted the proceedings with repeated shouts.
As Trump asserted his election victory granted him a mandate “has not been seen in many decades,” Rep. Al Green (D, Texas) rose and exclaimed, “You have no mandate to cut Medicaid!” and “He has no mandate!”
The chants of “USA! USA!” from Republicans initially overshadowed Green’s protests. However, Green persisted even as Trump attempted to continue his speech.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R, La.) intervened, reminding lawmakers of their duty to maintain order in the House. When Green continued to stand, shout, and wave his cane, Johnson ultimately instructed the House sergeant-at-arms to remove Green from the chamber—a move that some reporters are calling “unprecedented.”
Who is Al Green?
Green, 77, has been the representative for Texas’ reliably Democratic 9th congressional district, encompassing parts of Greater Houston, since 2005. Prior to this, he served as a justice of the peace in Harris County.
Green is known for previously initiating multiple impeachment efforts against Trump during Trump’s first term. In February, Green announced his intention to introduce impeachment articles against Trump again, following the President’s remarks about.
