DENVER — An American Airlines aircraft experienced a fire upon landing at Denver International Airport on Thursday. Emergency slides were deployed to facilitate a rapid evacuation of passengers.
Flight 1006, en route from Colorado Springs Airport to Dallas Fort Worth, was diverted to Denver and made a safe landing at approximately 5:15 p.m. The diversion occurred after the flight crew reported engine vibrations, according to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration.
The FAA further stated that while taxiing to the gate, one of the engines on the Boeing 737-800 ignited.
Images and videos shared by news sources depicted passengers on the plane’s wing amidst smoke surrounding the aircraft. The FAA confirmed that passengers evacuated using the emergency slides.
American Airlines released a statement indicating that the flight encountered an engine problem while taxiing to the gate. The precise moment the fire broke out was not immediately specified.
Airline authorities confirmed that the 172 passengers and six crew members were safely transported to the terminal.
No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
“We extend our gratitude to our crew members, the Denver International Airport team, and first responders for their swift and effective response, prioritizing the safety of everyone onboard and on the ground,” American Airlines stated.
According to an airport spokesperson, firefighters extinguished the fire by the evening.
The FAA has announced it will conduct an investigation into the incident.
This event follows a recent series of aviation incidents and near misses that have heightened concerns about air travel.
