Close-Up Of Pills On Table

NEW ORLEANS — Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry signed into law on Friday a first-of-its-kind legislation that designates two abortion-inducing drugs as controlled and dangerous substances.

The Republican governor announced his signing of the bill in Baton Rouge the day after the state Senate gave it final legislative approval.

Opponents of the measure included many doctors, who argued that the drugs have other crucial reproductive health care uses and that changing the classification could make it more difficult to prescribe them.

Supporters of the bill, which pertains to the drugs mifepristone and misoprostol, argued that it would shield expectant mothers from forced abortions, although they only mentioned one instance of this happening in Texas.
