(SeaPRwire) –   During his initial court appearance in Washington, D.C., on Monday, Cole Tomas Allen—the suspect in Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting—was formally charged with the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump, an offense that carries a potential life sentence.

The 31-year-old also faces charges related to the illegal interstate transport of a firearm and the discharge of a weapon during a violent crime.

“He attempted to assassinate the president of the United States, Donald J. Trump,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Jocelyn Ballantine stated in court, adding, “We are asking the court to preventively detain Mr. Allen.”

U.S. Magistrate Judge Matthew Sharbaugh approved the prosecution’s request to hold Allen in custody pending further proceedings, despite defense attorney Tezira Abe’s observation that the defendant lacks a prior criminal record.

Allen did not enter a plea during Monday’s brief hearing.

Late Saturday, President Trump shared video on Truth Social featuring grainy security footage of a man sprinting through a hotel hallway before security personnel drew their weapons. Trump also released images of the suspect, identified as Allen, shown handcuffed and face-down on the floor surrounded by officers.

According to the Washington Metropolitan Police Department, Allen was equipped with a knife and two firearms—a shotgun and a handgun, both legally purchased in California—when he breached the security checkpoint shortly after 8:30 p.m. One law enforcement officer was injured during the incident and subsequently hospitalized.

Following the gunfire at the black-tie gala, guests and journalists took cover under tables as Secret Service agents and security teams evacuated high-ranking officials from the venue.

FBI Director Kash Patel stated on Fox News Monday morning that investigators moved with significant speed to gather evidence ahead of the arraignment.

“We’re going to be able to present to the world in less than 36 hours almost, exactly what happened,” Patel remarked. “This individual’s entire background, who he knew, where he lived, who he was talking to, everything about the firearms, everything about the ballistics.”

Who is Cole Tomas Allen?

Allen, a Torrance, California-based educator, describes himself on LinkedIn as a “mechanical engineer and computer scientist by degree, independent game developer by experience, teacher by birth.” His profile indicates he spent over six years as a part-time instructor for C2 Education, a firm focused on college test prep and counseling, while also working as an independent game developer. Records show he earned a mechanical engineering degree from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 2017 and a master’s degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills, in 2025.

Patel noted on “Fox and Friends” that the FBI’s Behavior Analysis Unit is currently reviewing Allen’s correspondence, social media activity, and writings, while conducting interviews to determine his motives.

Although Allen was registered as a “no party preference” voter in California, he reportedly sent a manifesto to his family shortly before the attack in which he identified as a “Friendly Federal Assassin,” claiming it was his obligation to target members of the Trump Administration.

The manifesto, first disclosed by the New York Post, stated, “I am no longer willing to permit a pedophile, rapist, and traitor to coat my hands with his crimes,” though it did not explicitly name the President.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated on “Meet the Press” Sunday that Allen’s targets were Trump Administration officials, “likely including the President.”

Blanche further noted that investigators believe Allen traveled by train from California to Chicago and then to Washington, where he checked into the Washington Hilton Hotel several days prior to the annual dinner.

According to the New York Times, Allen had informed students and friends before departing California that he was dealing with a personal emergency to explain his upcoming absence.
