SAO PAULO — Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is recovering in intensive care following surgery for an intracranial hemorrhage, according to a Sirio-Libanes hospital statement released early Tuesday.
The 79-year-old president underwent the procedure after experiencing headaches in October, which doctors attributed to the hemorrhage.
The hospital reported that President Lula, who traveled from Brasília to São Paulo for treatment, is stable and under observation in the ICU following the successful drainage of the bleeding.
Brazil’s presidential office has not yet commented on the situation.
Lula’s office previously announced the cancellation of his trip to a BRICS summit in Russia due to the incident. The injury resulted in a visible cut on the back of his head.
Sirio-Libanes hospital scheduled a press conference for 9 a.m. local time (12 a.m. GMT) to provide further details about the surgery.
