(SeaPRwire) –   In an era where our most critical dialogues seem more polarized than ever, it is simple to slip into habits that leave us stagnant.

Frequently, we withdraw to our respective sides, shun difficult discussions, or accept superficial politeness in place of genuine comprehension. However, the obstacles confronting us today require greater effort.

When a discussion starts to seem overly complicated or emotionally intense, we frequently resort to a familiar saying: “agree to disagree.” I have used this expression myself. It serves as a courteous method to sidestep conflict and maintain harmony.

However, I have realized that although it seems polite, “agree to disagree” shuts the door. It terminates the dialogue, and along with it, the chance for advancement. What if, conversely, we begin from the point where we already share consensus? What if we declare, “agree to agree”?

Instantly, we have initiated a discussion instead of concluding one. Constructing upon the shared foundation that already exists is essential for bridging our divisions and tackling our most intricate societal problems.

Begin with our points of consensus

Few topics illustrate the need for this strategy more vividly than gun violence.

Over the last four years, injuries from firearms have been the primary cause of mortality for children and adolescents in the United States. Nevertheless, uniting to address the catastrophic effects of this crisis persists as one of the country’s most significant hurdles. Many assume this subject is too divisive to even discuss.

I hold a different view. Indications suggest that Americans concur on more than we assume. For example, an Ad Council poll revealed that 80% of homes that own firearms acknowledge that secure storage lessens injuries. Additionally, a 2024 study spearheaded by the Ad Council discovered that eight out of 10 Americans are convinced that more constructive dialogues can aid in decreasing firearm injuries and fatalities among youth.

Essentially, we all desire to ensure the safety of our youth.

Initiating dialogue from a standpoint of mutual agreement creates space for discussions that previously seemed unattainable. When we begin with that basis, we transform challenging talks that might have been viewed as divisive into routes toward advancement.

And this requires numerous discussions.

The Ad Council implemented this model through our “Agree to Agree” initiative. The message is striking a chord. In under a year, 67% of parents familiar with the campaign report having discussed the prevention of firearm injuries and deaths with their children, compared to 48% of those unaware of it.

A framework for advancement

The “Agree to Agree” structure is a tactic for propelling society ahead, not by erasing distinctions, but by declining to allow them to control potential outcomes.

Divergence is unavoidable—regarding not only matters as intricate as gun violence but also in every relationship and collaboration we manage. There is not one individual on the planet with whom we concur on every point: neither a spouse, a friend, a coworker, nor an associate. Anticipating complete unanimity prior to taking action ensures only one result—that progress halts before it commences.

More significant than flawless consensus is how we handle divergence once we have decided to advance jointly. In a genuine collaboration, distinctions can reveal blind spots, introduce fresh viewpoints, and stress-test concepts that facilitate our progress.

When we regard disagreement as the stepping stones to mutual understanding, it transforms into the beginning, not the end. The subsequent dialogues then serve as the mechanism that keeps the solutions themselves more precise, lucid, and effective.

Guiding the Ad Council for over a decade has instructed me that regardless of our sector or the extent of our connections, we all possess the ability to generate tangible change.

It occurs when we opt to listen, engage, and act—collectively. When we consent (to agree) to construct upon the shared foundation we possess, that is when we pave the way for enhanced cooperation and more potent solutions.
