(SeaPRwire) – President Donald Trump has declared his acceptance of a proposed two-week ceasefire with Iran and the prompt reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, retreating from a personal ultimatum to initiate extensive new strikes he cautioned could lay waste to the nation.
In a social media update mere hours before the 8 p.m. deadline, Trump stated he would “suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks” after discussions with Pakistan’s leaders and what he called significant headway toward a more comprehensive pact with Iran.
“This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE!” Trump posted on Truth Social. “The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East.”
He further noted that the U.S. obtained a ten-point plan from Iran which he views “is a workable basis on which to negotiate.”
The statement signaled an abrupt reduction in tensions following a day of remarkable warnings where Trump cautioned that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran refused his terms. The provisional ceasefire is contingent on Iran’s consent to swiftly and completely reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the critical chokepoint for approximately one-fifth of the global oil supply. Since the conflict’s initial phase, Iran has largely blocked transit through the strait, causing a worldwide energy crisis that has driven fuel costs up and unsettled financial markets.
Trump had earlier indicated the United States could swiftly demolish Iran’s bridges, power stations, and other vital structures—an operation that defense and legal specialists said could cripple civilian existence in a country of about 85 million and potentially breach international law.
The choice to retract his threat highlighted a recurring theme during Trump’s administration: making extreme threats, then adjusting course as the dangers of implementation become clearer. It also revealed the conflicting pressures on a White House that has spent weeks nearing a broader conflict while simultaneously looking for an exit.
TIME had earlier reported Trump’s mounting desire to find a diplomatic exit. Surveys indicate waning public backing for the war, and climbing fuel prices and market instability have worried Republican legislators before the midterm elections. Concurrently, the President has been hesitant to conclude the hostilities without securing a claim to a clear-cut win.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
