Liaoyang, China, November 20, 2024 – Pinghu Tower, one of Liaoyang City’s four Ming Dynasty corner towers, originally constructed in 1372, has reopened after renovations completed in June 2024. The Liaoyang Municipal Committee’s Publicity Department reports that over two million visitors explored the newly restored tower between June and October. Its popularity has established it as a key cultural and tourism landmark in Liaoyang. A planned “Ice and Snow Carnival” is scheduled from December 2024 to February 2025.
Liaoyang, a city with over 2,300 years of history, is considered the oldest city in Northeast China. Its Han and Wei dynasty mural tombs, predating Dunhuang’s grotto murals by over 300 years, showcase the city’s significant historical role. The city served as a capital for several dynasties and a crucial military command center within the Great Wall’s Liaodong Town defenses. Pinghu Tower stands as a testament to this military strength and urban design.
Today, Pinghu Tower, alongside attractions such as the White Pagoda, Guangyou Temple, and Youth Lake, forms a central tourist route, highlighting Ming Dynasty architecture and Liaoyang’s strategic importance as one of nine key locations during that era.
Tourist numbers in Liaoyang reached 12.5804 million in the first three quarters of 2024, a 35.11% year-on-year increase.
