Lara Trump is resigning as Republican National Committee co-chair to explore several options, coinciding with her father-in-law’s return to the presidency.
One possibility is succeeding Senator Marco Rubio, who President-elect Trump nominated as Secretary of State. Should Rubio be confirmed, Florida’s governor will appoint Rubio’s replacement until the next election in 2026.
“It’s a serious consideration,” she told the Associated Press. “To be honest, I’m unsure of the specifics. I need all the facts before making a decision. But yes, I would definitely consider it.”
Since her March election as RNC co-chair, Lara Trump played a vital role in the Republicans regaining the White House and Senate, while narrowly holding onto the House. Her future actions will significantly influence Republican politics due to her prominence and connection to the incoming president.
The prospect of a Trump family member in the Senate has gained support within some Republican circles. Maye Musk, mother of Elon Musk, is among those advocating for Lara Trump to replace Rubio.
“The Senate is an old boys’ club. We need a smart, young, outspoken woman to expose their secrets,” she tweeted. Lara Trump is 42 years old.
Elon Musk, who was with Lara Trump on election night at Mar-a-Lago, responded to his mother’s tweet: “Lara Trump is truly exceptional.”
Under Chairman Michael Whatley and Lara Trump’s leadership, the RNC invested heavily in recruiting approximately 230,000 volunteers and a legal team for its “election integrity” initiative, four years after Donald Trump’s loss to Joe Biden, referencing unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud. Groups like Turning Point Action and Musk’s America PAC handled much of the advertising and voter mobilization.
While Whatley remains chairman, Lara Trump feels she has achieved her goals as co-chair.
“With this significant victory, I believe my time is complete,” she stated. “I’ve accomplished my objectives.”
Lara Trump praised Musk’s new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a non-governmental task force led by Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, tasked with removing federal employees, cutting programs, and reducing regulations as part of Trump’s “Save America” agenda for his second term.
“This level of federal government change hasn’t been seen since our nation’s founding,” she commented. “If successful, it will be transformative for America.”
She anticipates a different presidency this time, beginning with the administration’s structure: Unlike Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner’s roles in the previous administration, Lara Trump doesn’t foresee any family members serving in the White House.
“He wants to serve effectively for four years, and that’s it,” she said. “Four years, and he’s done.”
Lara Trump also predicts a more unified Republican Party. Following the merger of the Trump campaign and RNC in May, with subsequent staff changes and restructuring, she anticipates challenges for GOP lawmakers who oppose Trump’s platform.
“The party has completely shifted,” she explained. “People are more openly expressing their political views.”
