ISLAMABAD — A Pakistani court issued 14- and 7-year prison sentences on Friday to the nation’s former Prime Minister and his wife following a corruption conviction, according to officials and his legal counsel.
The couple stands accused of accepting land from a real estate magnate in exchange for illicit funds during Khan’s tenure.
Prosecutors allege that the businessman, Malik Riaz, subsequently used the same laundered money—£190 million ($240 million) repatriated to Pakistan by British authorities in 2022—to settle fines levied against him in a separate case, with Khan’s alleged complicity.
Khan has consistently maintained his innocence, asserting since his 2023 arrest that these accusations are politically motivated efforts to prevent his political comeback.
Khan, removed from office in April 2022 via a no-confidence vote, has faced prior convictions on corruption, state secrets disclosure, and marital infringement charges, resulting in separate sentences of 10, 14, and 7 years respectively. Pakistani law mandates concurrent sentencing, meaning he serves only the longest term.
