President Biden, having pledged to restore national unity after Donald Trump’s presidency, delivers a farewell address acknowledging his unfinished agenda as he prepares to leave office.
In his farewell address, Biden expressed optimism for America’s future while highlighting concerns about concentrated power, the spread of misinformation by a “tech-industrial complex,” and the need for campaign finance reform. He stated, “Today an oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth and influence that literally threatens our entire democracy, our basic rights and freedoms, and a fair shot for everyone to get ahead,”
While not explicitly naming specific individuals, Biden addressed the influence of wealthy individuals in politics, drawing parallels to historical struggles against concentrated power, emphasizing the need for accountability rather than punitive measures against the wealthy.
During his address, Biden reviewed his administration’s accomplishments, including economic recovery, manufacturing growth, job creation, and efforts to transition away from fossil fuels. He asserted that environmental protection and economic progress are not mutually exclusive.
Biden discussed destabilizing forces impacting American society and politics, criticizing social media platforms for allowing the spread of misinformation. He stated, “The truth is smothered by lies told for power and for profit,” adding that, “Americans are being buried under an avalanche of misinformation and disinformation enabling the abuse of power. The free press is crumbling, others are disappearing, social media has given up on fact checking.”
To address these challenges, Biden advocated for 18-year term limits for Supreme Court justices and an end to “dark money” in politics. He also acknowledged the potential benefits of artificial intelligence while emphasizing the need for safeguards to protect fundamental rights.
Biden concluded his address by expressing a desire for a successful transition of power, contrasting his approach with that of his predecessor. He emphasized the importance of strong institutions and the American people, leaving the nation with the charge: “It’s your turn to stand guard.”
